From Hikkaduwa on the country’s southwest coast all the way over to Arugam Bay on the west, an endless supply of reef configurations, perfectly formed pointbreaks, and undiscovered bays and beaches come together to form one incredible playground just waiting to be explored. In other words, the Southern Coast is a surfer’s paradise with spectacular seascapes for all levels of surfers.

If you’re willing to move around a bit to check out the various breaks for the least number of crowds, you can dodge the worst of it on the Southwest Coast because there is such a wide variety of waves to choose from nearby. There are a lot of novice and intermediate surfers who won’t be interested in surfing a swift hollow shallow reef break, so if you’re an elite surfer you might even find yourself surfing Rams Right barrel with only a few other surfers out.

South Coast Main Surfing Points

Hikkaduwa

The Main Beach, with its gentle sand bottom and moderate waves, is home to some of the best surf schools and is therefore a great place to learn to surf.
Benny’s – Best for more advanced Surfers Main Reef
North Jetty – These surf points are best for intermediates

Unawatuna

Moderate and gentle waves can be seen at Dewata Beach and Clossenberg Beach. These surf spots, which are concealed in Unawatuna Bay, are the safest for novices.

Ahangama

Stick Point – best for beginners, intermediates and expert surfers
The Rock at Kabalanas -best for beginners, intermediates and expert surfers

Midigama

Coconut and Plantation – The best intermediate and advanced surf places are roughly one kilometer south of Midigama Beach. These two can withstand a two-meter wave.
Rams – Midigama’s greatest advanced surf spot: a short, shallow, and strong reef. It’s typical to see hollow waves and barrels. Only suitable for expert surfers.

Lazy Left – Low tide is the best time for advanced surfers.Offers long 500 meter left rides.
Lazy Right -Best for level 2 beginners. Very good for long boards in the surfing point.

Weligama

Weligama Bay, which can be seen on the map, is a sizable bay on the southern tip of the island. Because it is protected from the island’s greatest swells, its waves are gentle and smooth, making them perfect for beginning surfers. You may still enjoy calm and mild beach breakers here even when towering walls puncture the reefs of neighboring surf spots outside of Weligama Bay.

Mirissa

It contains a well-known reef break that is suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. For those looking for a party, the Mirissa shoreline is flanked by several restaurants and cafes, as well as a vibrant nightlife scene.

Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya Bay – One of the best surfing points for beginners and intermediates.
